Drawing Louis Gossett Jr - Part 1

New video uploaded on YouTube. I took photos of Lou in 2016 at his house in LA. I wanted to draw him for a long time and am very happy to have had that opportunity. This is the first of 2 works that I will be doing based on the photo shoot.
I build up the face with my usual sculptural approach and I am now starting to work in the details.

Limited Edition Print "Mary"

I finally released my first Limited Edition Art Print. It is from my latest graphite drawing "Mary". The work is printed on Hahnemuehle Photo Rag 308 g/m² paper in the highest resolution. The format of ca. 20 x 28 inches (50 x 70 cm) is a bit smaller but close to the original graphite drawing.
The edition size is strictly limited to 40, each print is signed and numbered and comes with a certificate of authenticity. Once sold out there will be no reprints whatsoever(i.e. different format). The price for the print is 350 Euros (ca. $470) plus 30 Euros (ca. $40)  shipping worldwide.
You can either order it from or just contact me directly via email.

Waterman exhibitions in Paris and Tokyo

I just returned back from Tokyo, Japan where I did a promotion exhibition for Waterman Paris. In April I drew a large scale ball pen drawing for them to accompany the introduction of their new Blue Obsession Pen Collection. The work was shown in Paris and in Tokyo and I also did a bit of life drawing with the pens at the events.
You can find a promotion video  and more information about the project on the Waterman website. There is also a competition to win the artwork but you must be either living in France or Japan to be able to enter the competition.

Here are some photos of the exhibitions in Paris and in Tokyo:

Drawing Materials

I get many questions about the materials I use for graphite drawings so I put together this list.

But be aware as long as you use good quality materials you should not be too concerned about the right materials. Just experiment a lot to find the materials which you like and which give you the results you want.

I used to draw on Canson Mi-teintes paper (the smoother backside) but now I draw more on Hahnemühle Nostalgie Sketchpad. But I am still trying a lot of new papers. I prefer using papers with at least a bit of texture or "tooth". I am not fond of ultra smooth paper. Often I see people using printer paper -that is not good for a serious drawing.

I draw with Faber-Castell pencils (Serie 9000), standard wooden pencils, using more or less all grades that are available (5H to 8B). Graphite is always grey, even the softest pencil, so I use a black color pencil or the 8B pencil by Staedtler (which claims to be graphite but it is mixed with something) to draw the darkest areas. I am using this not for dark backgrounds though. Charcoal will not stick on graphite, so I do not use it. But the other way around (graphite over charcoal) works, so you might want to try that although I am not doing it.

When drawing on white paper, I draw with an eraser to get the lighter parts and highlights. Tools here are a kneadable eraser, an eraser pencil by Faber-Castell (7056) and an eraser pencil by Tombow (Mono Zero).
On toned, darker paper I use a white Charcoal pencil (General's) for the highlights and lights. Instead of the that you can also use white pastel or white colored pencil.

For blending I use ordinary tissues and blending stumps. I have not tried brushes for blending but you might want to try them.

Beethoven - Cover Illustration

"Beethoven", 2012
Cover illustration for "Heritage of our World", distributed with National Geographics, Germany.

I used a painting of Beethoven and a photo of a bust for reference. For texture reference I took a photo. Still had to improvise a lot -the hair is completely improvised based on a Beethoven bust.
